Ellen Wheeler and Eleanor Yick attended the November 1, 2017 meeting of the Select Committee on Higher Education convened by Assemblymember Marc Berman. The purpose of the meeting was to update California’s Master Plan for Higher Education. The committee heard from experts and members of the public regarding multiple issues involving higher education and the needs of today’s students and society. San Jose State University President Dr. Mary A. Papazian opened the meeting. One striking statistic offered by researchers is that for every 1,000 9th graders in California only 305 of them will graduate from college.

Both Ellen and Eleanor were part of the prior LWVC study on Public Higher Education in California. They prepared a paper copy of the study results for each member of this select committee and gave them to an aide to Marc Berman for distribution. Some audience members also requested copies of the study following the public comments made by Eleanor.
