The 43 members at the June 1st League of Women Voters Los Altos Mountain View annual business meeting elected a new board, approved a conditional change in tax status to 501c(3) –tax exempt donations– and heard Joe Simitian, two-term state Senator and our current Santa Clara County Board Supervisor, talk about Civility in Politics.
Our League of Women Voters Los Altos Mountain View chapter recommended the following for education and advocacy at the state level. (No studies were recommended.)
1. Continue working on core issues such as health care, redistricting, initiative and referendum (all)
2. Promote school safety using LWVC’s position on gun control (Dorothea Grimes-Farrow, Steve Chessin)
3. Explore public funding for early childhood education (Ellen Wheeler)
President Sue Graham recognized the Observer Corps, the Board and charter member Barbara Emerich. She has covered Juvenile Justice for the League for many years and is an expert in the field.
LWVLAMV Annual Meeting 2013 Highlights
Sue Graham talked about some highlights from the year: League of Women Voters Los Altos Mountain View now sends our monthly newsletter, the Voter, by email and post it on our website. This makes it available to a much wider audience. We partnered with Google before the 2012 election to present the candidates for Mountain View City Council. We held a highly successful Meet Your Elected Officials event which attracted over 100 people. We wrote letters to both SCVWD and Mountain View City Council urging them to approve the Permanente Flood Control project which now has been approved by both agencies. Our housing committee worked tirelessly for affordable housing in our towns. Our Observer Corps represented the LWVLAMV board in the community.
VP of Program, Carol Kuiper, who organized the annual meeting and luncheon at Michaels Restaurant, presented outgoing President Sue Graham with a League branded gift.
