The War on Ukraine: Where Are We Now

In February, Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launching the largest war in Europe since World War II concluded in 1945. The discussion will explore the motives of Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin for this war of choice, the course of the conflict and the Kremlin's critical miscalculations. It will also look at Western policy and what course the war might take in the future.
Steven Pifer
Steven Pifer is a retired Foreign Service officer whose work focused on nuclear arms control, Russia, Ukraine and European security. His more than 25 years with the Department of State included assignments as deputy assistant secretary with responsibilities for Russia and Ukraine, U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, and special assistant to the President and senior director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia on the National Security Council. He also served at the U.S. embassies in Warsaw, Moscow and London as well as with the U.S. delegation to the negotiation on intermediate-range nuclear forces in Geneva. He currently is affiliated with the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford and a nonresident senior fellow with the Brookings Institution. He is author of The Eagle and the Trident: U.S.-Ukraine Relations in Turbulent Times.
