Citizen Education
In our Education role, we present unbiased, nonpartisan information to facilitate informed and active participation in government.
Our members conduct studies on issues of importance to our organization. These studies are nonpartisan and do not involve action or lobbying.
Some of our education projects are:
- Strategies for a Sustainable Santa Clara County: Developing Goals and Planning Tools. Powerpoint presentations given on 1/25/2008.
- Public Schools 101: Are schools what we want them to be? Participate in updating the California League of Women Voters positions on education policy. Join the discussion on Sunday, November 14, 2004, 3-6pm, in the Garden House at Shoup Park in Los Altos.
- Stem Cell Research - Promises and Challenges: On August 10, 2004, the Los Altos-Mountain View League sponsored a public forum on stem cell research with two distinguished speakers. The questions addressed were: (1) What are the legal and ethical issues? (2) What does the law currently allow? (3) What are the promises and the challenges of this research?
- Civil Rights, Post 9/11: On June 7, 2003, the Leagues of Santa Clara County sponsored a special meeting. View this program online and more...
- How California Cities Make Appointments to Non-Elective Positions: The final report of a survey conducted by our League during the summer of 2002 looking at the ways in which California cities make appointments to boards, commissions and committees.
- High School Exit Exam -- Preparation & Communication:
In May 2001, our membership voted to study our schools in relationship to the California High School Exit Exam to develop positions that would enable us to actively support and promote preparation for the exam and to enhance communication among schools and parents about the exam. A Web site was developed by the study committee as a public service for the purpose of educating the community about the exit exam.
- A Public Dialogue on the Future of Medicare. (archive). A public meeting was held on October 17, 1998 with seven distinguished speakers. This was one of the 10 major national conferences about Medicare in the country with the purpose of gathering public input for the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare. A transcript of that meeting was prepared.
