Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:
As president of the League of Women Voters of Los Altos/Mountain View, I am writing to strongly urge you to sign AB 2106 (Ridley-Thomas), the California Tax Expenditure Accountability Act.
Currently, legislators and the public have little information upon which to assess the effectiveness of tax expenditures + a special category of tax credits, exemptions and other special tax breaks + which are renewed year to year without assessment of their effectiveness. AB 2106 will give legislators the information they need to evaluate these expenditures and eliminate those that are ineffective. It will also give the public the information it needs and deserves.
Assemblymember Ridley-Thomas proposes that the budget committee in each house should prioritize tax expenditures compared to all regular expenditures. If AB 2106 is signed into law, he will propose legislative rules to that effect in January. The League of Women Voters will support him in this.
The League has a long history of supporting good governance and accountability in government. In this tradition we urge you to sign AB 2106.
Sincerely,
Jane Turnbull, President
League of Women Voters of Los Altos/Mountain View
